Talking is Mental CIC launch new activity groups

Talking is Mental CIC is an organisation combating social isolation and loneliness amongst people in Glasgow through the provision of activity groups and by encouraging dialogue around the impacts of these issues and lessening the stigma surrounding them.
Talking is Mental are thrilled to announce that two new creative groups will be launching over the next 2 months, and they are looking for people to come along:
  • Art
This group will be a dedicated, safe and creative space for women and non-binary people. This will be a space for people to learn new skills and bring along what they are currently working on.This group will be facilitated by a qualified arts teacher supported by a volunteer with an interest in the arts. The group will allow people to  connect with others and feel safe in a dedicated environment. It also encourages people to have a voice, choose what they want to work on, share their decisions and ask questions.
  • Writing
The new writing group will be a space to promote creativity and the sharing of experiences through different forms of writing in a safe and inclusive environment. Attendees can learn in a relaxed environment practice their writing skills with creative prompts and share them if they feel comfortable.
Since launching, over 100 people, and counting, have been welcomed to Talking is Mental’s existing groups. These are:
  • Theatre
The theatre group is a space where attendees can learn about performance, build their confidence, communication
and public speaking skills, and connect with like minded people. This group is totally free for attendees as we wanted to break down barriers for people in poverty taking part in the arts. The main aim is to connect people through theatre making. However, it also expands people’s perspectives, knowledge and understanding of people and the world around them.
  • Walking
The walking group is an accessible way to get fit, encouraging people to get outside and see areas outside of their
local community. It is a friendly space, where people are introduced to eachother at the start of each walk, and
encouraged to talk about themselves and how they’re feeling. Attendees are often surprised to find out that they
have far more in common with people they don’t know than they realise, and end up finding the walks to be a form
    of peer support.
  • Football: The football group was put in place to help people get more active in a safe and inclusive space. By having an activity to focus on, attendees feel more comfortable sharing how they are feeling. The group encourages people of all genders, ages backgrounds, abilities and religious affiliations to attend. By bringing people from all sides of communities together, it encourages people to connect and feel less alone or excluded.
All the groups are open to anyone, especially those who may be experiencing social isolation and loneliness. Social isolation and loneliness are often experienced with mental and physical health illnesses and difficulties, and as a result, Talking is Mental groups are designed to be safe, inclusive and accessible.
