What would make Glasgow’s people and places more resilient?

Glasgow City Council, in partnership with GCVS, will be consulting with Glasgow’s third sector on the city’s draft Resilience strategy  at the Albany Centre during August and September.

The strategy is being developed as part of the 100 Resilient Cities initiative, funded by the Rockerfeller Foundation, which aims to build the capacity for cities across the world to withstand some of the major environmental, social and economic challenges facing the 21st Century world.

Glasgow was chosen in the first cohort of cities to receive this support and has received funding to develop a strategy, which will make the city, and its people, more resilient

Resilience is the capacity of individuals, communities, businesses and systems within a city to survive, adapt and grow, not just as a response to the shocks and stresses that weaken the fabric of a city on a day to day basis or cyclical basis. Examples of these stresses include flooding, emergency incidents, high unemployment, changing demographics, poverty & deprivation, ageing infrastructure and climate change.

Glasgow has placed a key emphasis on the people-based aspects of resilience, not only in relation to climate change impacts but also to the broader challenges which individuals, families and communities face due to the consequences of long-term poverty and deprivation.

The draft strategy focuses on five key themes

  • Resilient people
  • Resilient institutions
  • Resilient places
  • Acute shocks
  • Monitoring and evaluation

The development of the strategy is an opportunity to involve local communities, businesses and organisations in a conversation on ‘what would make Glasgow a stronger city.  If your organisation would like to contribute to this agenda, the first event will be held on 28th August 2015 at 9.15am in the Albany Centre.  Book your place here
