Vacancy – Advocacy Worker – Lomond and Argyll Advocacy Service

POST TITLE:    Advocacy Worker
Salary:              £19388 pa (FTE- £26099-£28638 pa)
Contract:          Initially 12 month contact
Hours:              26 hours per week
Location:          Hybrid working with travel required across Argyll and Bute

This is a new post and service, commissioned by Argyll and Bute Community Justice Services with the specific intention of supporting adults on their liberation from prison. The role is to support these adults in ensuring their Human Rights are upheld, their voice heard and services respond to give the best chance of re integration to their communities and ability to live meaningful lives.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To undertake advocacy work as directed by the Justice Services Advocacy Coordinator and Argyll and Bute Operations Manager. Visiting adults in a variety of setting, including prisons and using technology to meet with prisoners approaching liberation and travelling independently across Argyll and Bute and further afield
  • To assist in the processing, prioritisation of and response to referrals received by the Service.
  • To maintain client and operational records as required and to maintain a high standard in all elements of reporting and communication.
  • To undertake individual casework (and on occasions group casework), working alongside service users to promote self-determination and support their rights and to have their voice heard.
  • To establish a supportive relationship with individual clients and provide an ‘independent voice’ on their behalf.
  • To represent the views and wishes of the individual at a variety of formal and statutory meetings perhaps with Housing, Social Work, Health Services or in other contexts and to seek to ensure the rights are upheld and their voices heard
  • To assist the C.E.O, Advocacy Coordinator, Operations Manager and other team members in the promotion of the Service.
  • To raise awareness of the purpose of and the need for advocacy amongst service providers, voluntary groups, relatives, carers and the public.
  • To participate in team meetings, supervision and other meetings as required.
  • To liaise with other agencies, families, carers etc. as appropriate to advance the work of the Service.
  • To attend training sessions as appropriate to the post and specified by the C.E.O. & the Operations Manager.
  • To participate in procedures designed to underpin the quality of the Service’s work as directed by the Operations Manager.
  • Any other task consistent with the remit of the post.

Person Specification


  • Basic knowledge of community services ( e.g., housing, social work, health) systems and processes and ability to support advocacy partners to access services
  • An understanding of the principles of independent advocacy.
  • An understanding of the issues faced by people on their liberation from Prison.
  • Have the empathy, confidence and ability to work independently with people who may present with challenges.
  • An ability to represent the interests and needs of people we support.
  • Demonstrable commitment to the principles of empowerment and self-determination.
  • The ability to work with a range of individuals and agencies at all levels.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective presentation skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Good organisational skills and ability to maintain accurate records and provide brief reports.
  • An understanding of the importance of and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Full driving licence and access to a vehicle/ ability to travel independently across Argyll and Bute and occasionally further, as appropriate/required.
