Confidence Counts week Seven

Last week we explored what confidence may mean to you. This week we are looking at learning and why its okay not to get it right first time. Okay, can we agree everyone needs to keep learning because no one knows it all?

That is totally different from believing you can’t and never will learn. When something is missing or didn’t go as planned at first, then try thinking about how it could be done differently next time. Don’t worry about failing. Almost everyone fails at something at first. (I know I do!!)  Learning from it and keeping going usually gets us there in the end. If the initial approaches didn’t work, then a new approach probably is needed. Please reflect on this statement and if it has meaning for you, capture your reactions.

Points for reflection

If I don’t get it right straight away, then I usually…

A helpful response if I get something wrong may be………

So often we focus on what we cannot do yet, or, get wrong and forget all the amazing things we have learned and can do…………….Yep, you are good at more things than you give yourself credit for. The trouble is, we all tend to dwell upon what we can’t do, or don’t do well. This, of course, can make it hard for us to believe in our chances of succeeding at something new. There can also be the impact of what others have said to us.  Sadly we so often listen to people who are critical and do not take on board when we have been praised or complimented. Yes there are times when we may need to have a ‘critical friend’ I know I need one when it comes to my punctuation!! However, note the word friend, they are not trying to put us down or upset us but to help 🙂

If this has meaning for you. Take time to think and then write down or look for pictures that illustrate your past and current successes. Think about the learnings, skills and experiences that helped you succeed. Capture them in words or pictures so that you can remind yourself to use them again for new things you want to try. You are a lot more capable than you give yourself credit for being. Take time to capture and write down, the things at which you are good at already. Self-confidence is aided by reminding ourselves of the skills, abilities and positive experiences we already have, but perhaps do not value enough or take for granted. You are awesome remember that……. Oh yes you are! Remember, this post is for selfcare and self-reflection and not a replacement for professional advice. If something has affected your confidence in a way that you need support to work through, then please seek that support. Sometimes it can be hard to find, but it is there, be kind to yourself, you matter.

Point for reflection

What I know I am good at includes……….

Sometimes we are our own worst critic, and our inner voice can stop us in out tracks and even convince us not to try. Next week we shall explore the importance of a kind and encouraging inner voice. For now reflect on the importance of LAPS https://www.snowdropargyll.co.uk/resources/sea-of-self-confidence-amp-laps-learn-apply-practice-share We first need to decide what we need to learn to be more confident in that area, then we need to apply that learning in our lives, recognising we may need to practice to become fully confident and proficient in that area, then we may decide we want to share our learning to inspire others. No matter how much we know, no one knows it all and everyday is a chance to learn. If you need a wee bit of inspiration these lifelong learning affirmation cards may be of interest https://www.snowdropargyll.co.uk/resources/learning-affirmation-cards

Look after you, you do matter, we all do and caring for ourselves and each other goes a long way to increasing everyone’s confidence. We have been in challenging times now for a while (understatement!) and we remain in challenging times, and this can impact on our confidence, however, confidence can be regained and it can help us to hold on.

Thanks for reading
