Confidence Counts week 5
Posted: 13th September 2026
This week we are going to look at motivation, confidence and goal setting. We can spend a lot of time thinking about how to improve our lives before doing anything with our ideas. Instead of getting exhausted by just thinking without doing, try taking even modest actions that begin to move you closer toward your goals.
Achieving self-confidence is a journey that requires patience, persistence, and a positive mindset. It’s natural to encounter setbacks along the way. But maintaining your motivation is key to success. Here are ten tips to help you stay motivated:
- Set Clear Goals
Start by setting specific, achievable goals. Clearly defined objectives give you a sense of direction and something tangible to work towards. Make sure these goals are realistic and align with your ultimate vision of self-confidence. For example, the goal to ‘feel more comfortable asking questions’ may be a helpful starting point.
- Celebrate Small Wins
Acknowledge and celebrate each milestone you achieve, no matter how small. Recognising your progress boosts your morale and reinforces the idea that you are moving in the right direction.
- Visualise Success
Spend a few minutes each day visualising your success. Imagine yourself as a confident individual, handling situations with ease. This practice can enhance your motivation by making your goals feel more attainable.
- Keep a Positive Mindset
Maintain a positive attitude even when faced with challenges. Replace negative thoughts with affirmations. Remind yourself of your strengths. A positive mindset can greatly influence your motivation levels and become affirmative, self-fulfilling prophecies.
- Seek and Value Support
Surround yourself with supportive friends, family, or mentors who encourage your efforts and believe in your potential. Having a support system can provide you with the encouragement you need to persevere.
- Avoid Sabotaging Yourself
When tasks seem overwhelming, break them down into smaller, more manageable steps. Tackling smaller pieces makes it easier to maintain momentum. Achievable actions prevent you from feeling discouraged or giving up.
- Learn from Setbacks
Instead of viewing setbacks as failures, see them as learning opportunities. Analyse what went wrong, adjust your approach, and move forward with newfound knowledge and resilience. Remember no one always gets it right first time . . . or all the time!
- Stay Consistent
Consistency is key to building confidence. Dedicate a little time each day to work on your goals, even if progress seems slow. Regular practice ensures steady improvement and keeps you focused.
- Reflect on Progress
Take time to reflect on how far you’ve come. Reviewing your progress can reignite your motivation by reminding you of the strides you’ve already made. This will also strengthening your commitment to continue.
- Reward Yourself
Plan rewards for reaching certain milestones. Whether it’s treating yourself to something special or taking a day off to relax, rewards can serve as powerful motivators for us to keep pushing forward.
Goal setting snakes and ladders
By incorporating these tips into your routine, you’ll be better equipped to stay motivated and committed to building your self-confidence. Remember, the journey may be challenging, but the rewards are well worth the effort. The goal setting snakes and ladders is a useful tool for capturing your confidence goal. Write down the steps you plan to take; the possible setbacks; how you will overcome them; and the reward you will give yourself for each successful stage of your journey.
Next time we will explore what does confidence mean to you? Till then be kind to yourself and remember you matter. I have always wanted to be a writer and as COPE Scotland enters its final months I am thinking what next. I have also started to have a wee go at poetry, so here is a wee one which is about confidence
One Step at a Time
When was it that we learned to believe
that we could not,
when once we believed we could?
As children, we rose with curious hearts,
reaching for the world with open hands.
We learned to walk on uncertain feet,
though our steps were wobbly,
though we stumbled,
though sometimes we fell.
We did not call the falling failure.
We did not whisper, You are not enough.
We simply rested,
gathered our courage,
and tried again.
So how is it that, as adults,
when life knocks us down,
we sometimes stay there—
mistaking the ground for our ending,
mistaking a hard moment
for a hopeless life?
But falling is not the same as failing.
A pause is not surrender.
And losing confidence
does not mean it is gone forever.
Sometimes it is waiting quietly
beneath the fear,
beneath the doubt,
beneath all the unkind words
we have learned to say to ourselves.
Call it back gently.
Speak to yourself
as you would to a child
taking their first brave steps:
with patience,
with kindness,
with love.
You are awesome,
not because you never stumble,
but because you keep becoming,
keep learning,
keep reaching for the next step.
When life throws its challenges,
as life so often does,
place one hand upon your heart
and remember:
I matter.
I can do this.
I am more than this moment.
I do not have to do it all at once.
The way forward may be small.
It may be shaky.
It may begin with simply getting up.
But a step is still a step.
And another will follow.
So breathe.
Be gentle with yourself.
Believe in what you can
and let go, for now,
of all you think you cannot.
You learned to walk
one unsteady step at a time.
You can find your way again
the same way:
one breath,
one choice,
one step at a time.
