Sign a letter to oppose planned benefit changes

GCVS has been working with our colleagues at the Poverty Alliance as a parliamentary vote approaches regarding proposed changes to UK disability benefits.

The Pathways to Work Green Paper

Announced through the Green Paper ‘Pathways to Work‘, planned changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Universal Credit health elements, and associated assessments are likely to have significant financial, health, and wellbeing implications for both existing and new claimants. It is expected that many hundreds of thousands of disabled individuals and unpaid carers will be negatively affected.

While not all the proposed changes will affect claimants in Scotland directly, there may be consequences for social security and public finances here.

There is growing concern across the voluntary sector about the planned benefit changes and cuts, including the focus on work for people who may be too ill to engage in paid employment and the further undermining of a benefits system which is already seen as inadequate to meet even basic daily living costs for disabled people.

In collaboration with our colleagues at the Poverty Alliance, we’re urging MPs and Ministers to reconsider and oppose these proposals, and stand alongside disabled people and their families.

GCVS discussion to shape response

Voluntary sector organisations are invited to a discussion session regarding the Green Paper on 9 June, at 12 noon. We will examine how the proposed changes might affect people in Glasgow and what they could mean for the city’s voluntary sector. This discussion will help us formulate our response to the government’s consultation.
