Help your organisation get up to speed

An informative new Health and Safety e-learning course is now live on the TSI Learning Portal – an online resource for staff and volunteers in Scotland’s voluntary sector.

‘An overview of Workplace Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations for Employers’ will examine some of the key legal, moral and financial obligations for organisations. It includes:

• Health & Safety duties
• Implications for organisations
• Knowing the legislation to consult
• Some specific duties and regulations relevant to the workplace
• Implementing best practice to ensure compliance
• Using management systems to manage risks, compliance and improve performance
• An overview of the Health & Safety Executives’ management system 

The course contains 4 quizzes to help evaluate your progress. It also contains 4 videos from The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), a global organisation for health and safety professionals, based in the UK.

Why is this resource important?

It is vital to understand the legal requirements under Health and Safety law, including the ramifications for organisations should they fail to meet the standards required. A strong culture and understanding of health and safety within your organisation helps to maintain compliance with laws and, most importantly, protect staff.

In this e-learning course, you will learn what Health and Safety duties you may need to consider for your organisation, how they should be implemented, and where to find information to assist you.

It will also introduce the concept of a management system for Health and Safety and examine how implementing one can help manage risks and improve performance. Lastly, the course will examine some of the everyday regulations that workplaces should consider, specifically those outlined in the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.

This course is free for third sector organisations in Scotland. To access it free, you’ll need a code which you can get by emailing cam.pollock@gcvs.org.uk. The TSI learning portal provides online courses and resources for community groups, voluntary organisations and social enterprises across Scotland. Meet the Trainer

The course has been written by Cam Pollock, Health and Safety Advisor at GCVS. Cam has ten years of experience working in this field and has been with GCVS, supporting voluntary organisations with compliance and advice for the last four years.

Cam is trained in Health & Safety with a NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, NEBOSH Fire Safety & Risk Management, NEBOSH HSE Introduction to Incident Investigation, DSE Assessor Trained and LCA 9020 Legionella for Responsible Person in Hot & Cold-Water Systems & Other Risk Systems. He is also IOSH registered as a Technical Member grade of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
