GCVS Statement Against Racism

Glasgow has a long and proud reputation as a welcoming city. It is also a city built upon migration, and much of its growth has been fuelled by people moving from elsewhere to contribute to its economic development and rich cultural diversity.

Refugees and Asylum Seekers are people seeking safety, dignity and a chance to rebuild their lives. The positive welcome they receive in Glasgow is led in no small part by the city’s citizens and voluntary organisations providing essential services and ensuring that New Scots can contribute to and participate fully in Glasgow’s vibrant community.

The shocking racist riots in England last week were clearly intended to make people from ethnic minority communities feel unwelcome. While Glasgow and the rest of Scotland managed to avoid much of the disorder, there is no doubt in my mind that many of us – particularly those being targeted – will have found it distressing. It would also be naïve to believe that because there are no riots, there are no problems with racism north of the border.

Climate change, conflict, and political instability will continue to displace people worldwide. Glasgow’s spirit of inclusivity and compassion will not only improve the lives of those who seek refuge but also enrich the social fabric of the city as a whole.

GCVS wants to make clear on behalf of our staff and membership that the voluntary sector opposes racism and remains committed to Glasgow being the world’s most welcoming city – for everyone.
