GCVS Blog – Tackling Fraud Together Update #5

Deborah Mooney
TFT Project Manager & Digital Engagement Officer | GCVS

This month the TFT team were out and about again, this time in the City Centre and Merchant City areas of Glasgow.

A huge thanks to all of the businesses, cafés, shops and pubs who were kind enough to display our leaflets and posters once again – it’s really helping us to keep the messages updated and make sure citizens of Glasgow know what they’re up against when it comes to scams, plus where they can go for help if they think they’ve been a victim of fraud.

Fraud Headlines

  • This awful story serves as a stark reminder not to let cold-callers into your home and just how convincing they can seem.

Two Men Arrested Over Suspected £12m VAT Fraud in Glasgow

  • After this whopping £12m VAT fraud, HMRC reminded the public that this type of thing deprives the public of money that should be spent funding public services, and so is not a “victimless crime”.

New DVLA Scam Promising Car Tax Refund is Targeting Unsuspecting Motorists

  • One of the newest tactics being taken by fraudsters, this scam tries to get people to click a link from a text message and enter their details. Remember you should never give out your personal information in this way, and the DVLA explicitly stated that they will never ask for your personal details by text!

As ever, if you think you’ve fallen victim to a scam or you become aware of any suspicious activity, contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, or use their online reporting tool.
