Archbishops’ Commission offers vision for social care
31st May 2023
GCVS was delighted to host Dr. Anna Dixon as part of our ‘Valuing Social Care’ series of events on 15 May.
As the Co-Chair of the Archbishops’ Commission on Reimagining Care, Dr. Dixon outlined the call for a National Care Covenant and for three ‘big ideas’:
- Rethinking attitudes to care and support – helping people to flourish; challenging narratives on old age, disability and ill health;
- Rebalancing roles and responsibilities – a new deal for unpaid carers and valuing paid care work;
- Redesigning the social care system – long term planning; a move away from ‘piecemeal tinkering’.
Whilst the Commission’s work concentrated on social care in England, the report has obvious resonance for Scotland, the findings of the Feeley review and the wider debate about the future of care and support.
