Examples of our support
Strengthening a Growing Community Organisation
East End Recovery Sunday (EERS) is a community‑led recovery café in Glasgow’s East End, supporting individuals and families affected by addiction. Established in early 2024, EERS has quickly expanded from a small group of volunteers to a vibrant weekly community hub with more than 150 participants.
Throughout this period of rapid growth, GCVS has provided essential support across capacity building, funding advice, governance, and organisational development, helping EERS strengthen their structure and sustainability.
We’re delighted to have been able to provide support to EERS, throughout their journey so far, including:
- Advice on governance, policies, compliance, and good practice
- Guidance for grant funding applications
- Training to build confidence and improve organisational skills
- Networking opportunities, follow‑up support, and peer connections
- Signposting to other relevant third sector support organisations
Building Strong Foundations for Success

At the outset, the EERS team had limited experience in running a charity or applying for grants. So, it was their first approach for help with a funding application, which led to a meeting with our Funding Advice Officer. This initial conversation became a significant first step forward.
“We had been going a while, doing some fundraising amongst ourselves, and then the support from GCVS began when I met with their Funding Advice Officer for the first time. I got a good idea of what to put into grant applications… Having such clear expert advice to take that next step was amazing.”
With this early guidance, EERS secured their first successful grant, allowing them to cover their lease and stabilise operations during a crucial stage of development.
Developing Skills, Governance and Confidence
GCVS has played a key role in helping EERS move from informal fundraising to structured grant‑seeking and stronger governance practices. We have contributed to the team’s successful securing of several grants, including a significant National Lottery award that supports delivery for two years.
“We wouldn’t have progressed as quickly without GCVS. Once you get that first grant, it gives you confidence and the ones after that become more straightforward.”
As any organisation grows, it requires clearer processes and policies. We provide practical guidance on:
- PVG and Disclosure checks
- Safeguarding and safer working expectations
- Banking and financial systems
When the team encountered challenges in opening a charity bank account – something organisations often struggle with – we offered advice to support them through the process.
“GCVS helped us with advice in getting a bank account – it’s really difficult for a charity to do these days! … Having that backing and knowing we were not alone in this made a big difference, and eventually we got one that worked for us with no monthly charges.”
Connecting Through Networking and Peer Support
Our networking events have also helped this new team strengthen connections with other third sector organisations in Glasgow and open up access to additional specialist support.
These events encouraged trustees and volunteers who joined us to pursue additional training. They also broaden awareness of the support available from GCVS and its partners.
“Coming to the networking event, being able to speak to people about things we needed help with – they got in touch with me the next day.”

Positive Impact on Growth

With support from GCVS, East End Recovery Sunday has now:
- Expanded their volunteer team from 6 to 20
- Grown weekly attendance from 50 to more than 150 people
- Introduced new wellbeing activities such as yoga, line dancing, reiki, and personal training
- Supported volunteers and participants into training, qualifications and employment
- Formed new community partnerships with colleges and housing staff
- Developed a new website and improved digital fundraising skills
The guidance and training provided have strengthened their ability to deliver meaningful recovery‑focused activities and empowered volunteers and participants to build new skills and confidence.
Having Someone in Your Corner
When we spoke with the EERS team, they repeatedly highlighted the value of our support, which they described as practical, approachable, and responsive.
They now actively encourage other new charities and community groups to approach GCVS for help!
“GCVS has been nothing but brilliant… we wouldn’t be where we were without you.”
